For Rent: Wicker Park Private Office

June 23, 2015 in General

Work and build your business in an office in the heart of Wicker Park.

We have two offices available, both with huge windows facing Paulina Avenue, suitable for one- to two-person teams. Located at the corner of Milwaukee and Paulina, we are a short distance from the Blue Line El and all the restaurants, cafes, and bars along Division and Milwaukee.

Honestly, we love food as much as the next person, but here at Platform, we’re obsessed (addicted?) to coffee. Lucky for us, take your pick–we’re walking distance to Intelligentsia Wicker Park, La Colombe, and Wormhole Coffee. We’re across the street from Potbelly’s and just about as close to Antique Taco. Did we mention coffee?

Who we’re for: those of you that live in 60622 or 60647, off Milwaukee or the Blue Line. We are the only coworking office in the hood that offers genuine private offices. Yes, there are coworking spaces closer to the Loop, but….why? We don’t enjoy commuting. We don’t think you do, either.

Both offices come nicely equipped with desks and chairs. Also included in rent: utilities, internet connectivity, laser printing & faxes, coffee, cleaning, a private mailbox. Still, the most crucial component we offer: othere clever entrepreneurs who create an awesome shared office experience.

Interested in seeing your next office? Contact Melissa at 773.850.2797 to check it out.

Craft Beer Tasting At Platform Coworking Ravenswood

June 18, 2015 in General

Come by our Ravenswood coworking location (4422 N. Ravenswood Ave.) on Thursday, June 25th for the Platform Beer Tasting. Virginia Thomas, a certified beer expert with the Cicerone Certification Program, will be leading the tasting.

We’ll be sampling the beers and Thomas will be sharing her knowledge on the patio from 5:30-6:30 p.m. A range of beers from four Chicago breweries in or near the Ravenswood neighborhood will be featured: Begyle Brewing, Half Acre Beer Co., Metropolitan Brewing, and Spiteful Brewing.

“My plan is to offer the beers in an order that makes sense as far as developing flavors and talking about the flavors of the beer,” says Thomas. “I don’t expect people to be beer geeks, so we’re really going to work on the flavors of the beer and will it go well with BBQ, fried chicken or something else? The question is: How do you see yourself enjoying these beers?

“We’ll be trying to make connections between flavor variations, alcohol levels, and really exploring what the Ravenswood area  has to offer as far as craft beer flavors and tastes,” finishes Thomas.

Below are the beers we’ll be tasting.

Half Acre Lead Feather: When you think of a really dark, black ale beer, you might think of Guinness, but this selection isn’t heavy or thick.

Half Acre Gone Away IPA & Spiteful’s Alley Time Pale Ale: These two are similar in nature, but the Half Acre IPA is more hoppy, bitter and boozy.

Begyle Crash Landed American Wheat: This is a classic summer beer with high alcohol content and a very unique character.

Metropolitan Dynamo Copper Lager: This is a very unique, lager-style beer with lots of malt character and flavor.

The tasting is open to Platform members and guests. Cost is $15 for members, $20 for non-members.

RSVP to melissa@platformcoworking.com.

Platform Coworking Member:  Andrea Corral, CitiMaven

May 29, 2015 in Platform Coworking Members

Platform Coworking member Andrea Corral a.k.a. the CitiMaven splits her time between Chicago and Spain, and also between IT work and the wine business. A micro importer of Spanish wines, she keeps two laptops busy: one for her IT work, the other for her wine business. It’s fair to say she’s the Platform member you’re most likely to see opening a bottle of wine for tasting at most any time of day. The best part: she shares. Here’s more about the woman and her work.

Tell us about your business.

“I have a dualistic life. By trade I’m an IT consultant. However, I inherited some grape fields in Spain and I had to either pursue that, or let it go, and I love wine too much to do that. At first I was bringing the wine to this country to see if it would work, and sure enough, people wanted to buy it. It was a very organic process and now I import wines and distribute them. I am officially the smallest wine importer in Chicago,” says Corral, who notes that she likes plain talk when it comes to wine. She also enjoys the physical labor that comes with the job. “I spend the fall in the grape fields. I spend a lot of time picking grapes. Picking grapes is not sexy. It’s backbreaking.”

How much do you travel for business? Does that play into utilizing a coworking space?

“Spain is home base for me. I come back to Chicago to nurse my customers and projects. I’ve been in Spain for the past eight years or so, but I’m in the process of moving back to Chicago full-time. I’m originally from Spain. My parents immigrated and English is my second language. My accent comes out regularly,” says Corral. “I needed a space that’s accessible 24 hours a day. Access is critical because I’m at the office at 4 a.m., midday in Spain. I love the fact that Platform has a kitchen, and I can store my wine there. I’m that girl that loves to drink midday at lunch…and nobody judges me. I tried another spot downtown and it was like 10 a.m. and I would open a bottle and people are looking at me like, ‘This woman has an issue.’ I don’t get that at Platform. I feel like everyone there is busy with their own work, I don’t feel like anyone judges me.”

What do you do when not working?

“I’m a big wine drinker, so I do a lot of running. It keeps things balanced. I’ve completed the Bank of America Chicago Marathon,” says Corral. “I’m also a big foodie. I especially love BYO restaurants. I also like to take wine to non-BYO restaurants. If you call ahead and talk to the owners, they’ll more than likely let you bring your own wine and maybe charge you a small corkage fee.” In terms of pairing food with wine, Corral is casual: “There’s no right or wrong when it comes to pairing wine with food, just drink and eat what you enjoy.”

Platform Coworking Member: Whit Nelson, Brew Camp

May 1, 2015 in General, Platform Coworking Members

Did you know? People who own home beer brewing stores are very popular, so we’re glad to have Whit Nelson of Brew Camp coworking with us for about a year now.

Brew Camp is a home brew supply store not far from our coworking space in Ravenswood (they have a second location in Evanston), a Chicago neighborhood full of diverse businesses and people. Founded by Nelson and his partner, Jared Saunders, Brew Camp just celebrated their fourth year slinging hops. “Brew Camp was actually Jared’s idea,” says Nelson. “He had owned BrewCamp.com for years, and we kept talking about it.  Finally I said ‘Ok, let’s put up or shut up.’ The original plan was just to sell online, but once we opened, the community seemed quite glad to see us there.”

Brew Camp hosts private events, conducts classes, corporate education and more. “We’re going to be building out a full event space, so we can hold private parties, birthdays, and other events,” says Nelson. “Plans are in the works to renovate the private event space so people can come brew their own beer, wine, cider or soda.”

When he’s not brewing beer, Nelson plies his original trade: IT. He has a degree in computer science and builds custom software including the POS (point of sale) system and online store that run Brew Camp. The goal is to eventually craft all of that into a software suite and sell it to other small businesses.

That’s the kind of work he mostly does here at Platform. “I can’t really get a lot of work done in the shop, I tend to talk to a lot of customers and that’s good, but when I’m working on the back end, I need a quiet place to focus on my work or take a phone call,” says Nelson. “I’ve also found I have to get out of the house. There is a high correlation between productivity and putting on pants.

“It definitely puts me in the right mindset to get work done and [Platform] has all the tools and spaces I need to be productive. You never know you’re going to need a shredder, for instance, until you do. They seem to have everything right at hand.”

When it comes to coworking, Nelson has another unique perspective in that he utilizes coworking spaces when he’s on the road. “I travel around a lot and I pretty much try to find a coworking space wherever I am, just because I need it and I like it.

“I like really jumping in to the places I visit. With coworking, it’s almost like an Airbnb. You’re dropped right in the middle of it and you’re instantly meeting people as though you got a job in that city,” he says. “What could be more of a head start, especially when you’re a freelancer? I’ve used Liquid Space to find coworking locations in other cities. I try to find a different one every place I go and a different spot to work every time I’m there. They all have different styles: some are green and eco-oriented. Some are very physical, almost hardware-related with desks set up where you can assemble things, which I could see using on the home brew side of my work.”

This coworking veteran’s take on Platform? “I’m a headphones-on, head-down kind of worker, but it is a friendly space here,” he says. “What I really like to do is come in and work on Sundays. I always know that this place is here and almost empty on a Sunday, and I’ve definitely had some nice, chill, quiet, extremely productive Sundays. Now, with the new renovation, there’s even more space in which to work.”

Yet another facet to Nelson: he’s a comedian. “I moved to Chicago to do comedy, pretty much every kind you can name. But the late nights and smokey bars take their toll.” says Nelson. “Right now what I do is ‘Live Lit,’ basically where you write a short piece, get up and read it with a bunch of other writer geeks. Most common one I do is Write Club, at The Hideout.”

You can find out more about Brew Camp in the link at the beginning of this post, and find them on Facebook and Twitter.

New Trend? The Treadmill Desk

March 25, 2015 in General

Platform Coworking Ravenswood member Zach Miller likes to “play with power tools” when he’s not working for software development company, 42 Lines, and his custom-designed and -constructed treadmill desk proves it.

Miller decided to come up with a way to stay healthy and active while coworking. Hence, his creation. You know you want one! Interested? Here’s more info on the treadmill desk trend.

“I found that working at a standing desk gave me a sore back because I slouch too much, but it’s impossible to slouch when I’m walking,” says Miller as to why he took on the project. “I walk about one mile per hour and have no problem typing or focusing on my screen when I do. In any given work day I probably walk four to six miles.”

Here’s more about the work Zach does at 42 Lines (while exercising–genius!): “We develop custom software, primarily on the web and mobile devices, focusing on scalability, adaptability, and simplicity. Projects include web applications for online learning management, mobile web and mobile app creation, content management and distribution, payroll systems, scheduling and auditing of resources, e-commerce, development for embedded devices, creation of web frameworks, distributed installation software, compiler optimizations, GUI tools for rapid application prototyping, and monitoring software for high-traffic sites.”
